DeepX Health's Platform Technology Receives Funding for GillAlert Project to Advance Salmon Gill Health Monitoring

[Bergen, Norway, March 18th, 2025] – DeepX Health is pleased to announce that its project, “GillAlert,” has been awarded funding by the Norwegian Fiskeri- og havbruksnæringens forskningsfinansiering (FHF). This initiative will leverage DeepX’s cutting-edge dermatoscope technology to enhance the monitoring and management of salmon gill health in aquaculture.

Coordinated by the Norwegian Research Centre (NORCE), the GillAlert project is a collaborative effort that includes QuantiDoc, DeepX Health, and Lerøy Seafood Group ASA. Over the course of the next two years, the project will adapt DeepX’s advanced imaging technology—originally developed for human dermatology and skin cancer screening—to assess and quantify the health of salmon gills.

The need for improved gill health monitoring is urgent in the aquaculture industry, particularly due to the impact of delousing procedures, which often cause significant stress and physical damage to fish. By providing a semi-automated, non-invasive method for assessing gill health, GillAlert will empower farmers with actionable insights to improve fish welfare, optimize farm management practices, and reduce mortality rates.

GillAlert represents a significant step toward enhancing fish health and sustainability in the industry. Once validated, this technology has the potential to transform respiratory health management in salmon farming, benefitting aquaculture operations in Norway and beyond.

Originally developed as a breakthrough tool for early skin cancer detection in human medicine, DeepX’s imaging technology is now proving its versatility with applications extending to fish health. The GillAlert project showcases how this innovative approach can be adapted to new fields, offering aquaculture a powerful diagnostic tool for monitoring gill health. By applying this advanced technology to fish welfare, DeepX Health continues to demonstrate its commitment to cross-disciplinary innovation, bridging human and animal health through cutting-edge imaging and AI-driven analysis.
